PRISM - reporting donor egg freezing

If eggs are being collected form a donor and being cryopreserved, even if the recipient is known , the eggs should be frozen in the donor cycle and the freeze reported to HFEA in that way, from the donor cycle .

They should not be donated to the patient unless they are being used immediately by the recipient in a fresh (never been frozen) state to create embryos. Donated eggs should not be documented as donated to a recipient and frozen on the recipient record.

The recipient cycle is then a receive, thaw and inseminate cycle, using the ‘get eggs/embryos’ button and selecting the ‘the 'thaw from previous cycle’ option.

There are multiple reasons for this , in addition to HFEA PRISM reporting conditions.

E.g.

  • if eggs had been donated to a recipient and frozen on that recipient record in IDEAS, and then the donor-recipient link broke down for whatever reason and the eggs are no longer going to be used by that recipient, you would need to return them to the donor record in IDEAS which would be extremely difficult.

  • If frozen eggs are to be discarded without using them , they would be discarded ‘by the donor’ in a gamete Movement OUT - if the eggs are stored attached to the patient, that would not be possible to report.

  • Essentially , in a donor egg freeze , the licensed treatment reporting is all related to the donor (the stimulation, egg collection and freeze) and nothing needs to be reported connected to the recipient until the eggs are thawed and used in a recipient cycle.
